I’m going to start doing this from time to time because if someone as cheap as I am is willing to pay for these services (The Dispatch, The Free Press, Notes from the Middleground), they have to be worth about twenty times what I’m paying.

For those who just want the rundown, today’s column is about DHS notifying Afghan refugees, here legally with Temporary Protected Status, that they have seven days to leave the country. National Democratic Party messengers have long tried to make the case that Republicans, MAGA, and Donald Trump are opposed to immigration, its spokespeople happily conflating legal and illegal immigrants. The right’s response has been a reasonable, “We support legal immigration.” But now this with Afghan refugees. They aren’t gang members or campus agitators. So what is the line from the right now? I would imagine for most Republican voters, it’s still, “We support legal immigration.” For the party’s leaders, though, it’s less clear what they believe.

Those who see the president’s deportation program as vital should see the accidental deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia as an unnecessary distraction. Not unnecessary in the sense that it’s some non-issue ginned up by liberals and the press, but unnecessary in the sense that it detracts from the administration’s credibility on the topic when all it has to do is admit its mistake and request Garcia’s return. Trump supporters shouldn’t surrender their own credibility defending this move.

Today, I found one. As always, this isn’t an endorsement of one side over the other. It’s an attempt to present each side’s best arguments so you aren’t left with a caricature of the other party’s voters. (Party leaders? Go nuts. If they can't come across as nuanced and three-dimensional with all the airtime they hoover up, that’s on them.) Everyday voters deserve the benefit of the doubt, though. Columns like today’s offer it in spades.

It’s tougher to find ones supportive of them. Believe me, I’ve tried. That’s not to say a thoughtful argument can’t be made — it’s just that the ones I’m finding echo the administration’s talking points rather than bolster them with evidence. There’s also the fact that the immediate effects of the tariffs have been, with some exceptions, indisputably bad.

The administration’s insistence that the tariffs weren’t a negotiating tactic didn’t help the markets last week but, then again, that line might have been a negotiating tactic. Last night, Trump said he would be “open to talking” with other world leaders. CNN’s homepage currently says the Europeans have announced they’re “ready to negotiate.”

So maybe it will all work out. In the meantime, though, outside of the paragraph above, today’s link has the kindest words I can find from a Trump booster regarding the tariffs. And believe me, I know it’s from four days ago.

I think it’s trolling and a waste of time — ours and Trump’s. I also think it’s a bit of probing to see how much pushback the president gets. If he gets some, as he did with his declaration that “Massive Fraud [sic]… allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,” he backs off. If he doesn’t get a lot, as he didn’t from certain corners over January 6 and lies of a stolen 2020 election, he probes further and, before long, the trolling becomes the “truth” building its own head of steam.

I don’t have any patience for this, same as I didn’t for the Biden administration’s line that inflation was transitory or that he had a cold at his 2024 debate with Trump. Talking points like these betray a lack of seriousness, a lack of respect for the American people in general, and a lack of respect for the party faithful in particular, who are expected to blindly pick up the lines and run with them. It’s time to throw the “third term” line back.
