You’re welcome for that subheading. I didn’t fall asleep writing it so much as laughed at the thought of everyone falling asleep reading it. Yet former President Trump’s goal to repopulate a sizable portion of the federal bureaucracy with those supportive of his agenda would be extremely consequential.
First off, it’s important to note this isn’t some “he said, she said” issue. Trump hasn’t denied or disowned this plan. He started to implement it in his first term and has said he’d finish the job in his second. So with both sides in agreement that this initiative exists, we can get to the crux of the matter: what would it do to the government? Would it streamline it? Radicalize it? Change absolutely nothing about it? (That last seems unlikely.) Each side has its opinions, of course, and I am happy to share them here. For those who disagree with today’s column, I promise I’m on the lookout for a strong counter-argument. If you find one before I do, by all means please suggest it down in the comments.
