Today, I’m trying something a bit new. After posting a clip of someone supportive of the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling, I’ve been eager to link to a column critical of it. I found one today I think a great deal of — the trick is it’s potentially paywalled, the site offering readers only one free column a month. I’m sure other great pieces will come along, but I’m also sure the news cycle is frenetic and this ruling, despite its enormous implications, could be back page news come Monday. So there are two links today. Directly below this paragraph is the link to the immunity ruling column.
And directly below this paragraph is a link to a Democratic commentator who, since his post-debate column last week, has changed his mind on if Biden should stay in the race. This news story, despite the campaign’s mediocre efforts, isn’t going away. To my point above, its developments have overshadowed one of the most consequential and (I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to say) controversial Supreme Court decisions since Bush v. Gore. And the president’s interview with George Stephanopoulos, rescheduled to air tonight rather than Sunday, will keep it in the news all weekend. So, as Steve Scully likes to say, that’s the state of play at this moment. I’m endlessly curious to see what it will be in 24 hours.
