In my time running One Daily Link, I’ve learned a few tricks to help me navigate our political environment which I’d like to share.
When I see the word “dangerous” in a column, unless it precedes “carbon monoxide leak” or “Boeing 737,” I stop reading. Hundreds of adjectives exist to describe contentious moments in American politics (unnecessary, unfortunate, uncalled for… those are just the u’s off the top of my head). If literal danger isn’t in the offing, columnists don’t need to invoke it.
When I hear politicians and pundits yelling, I stop listening. Odds are there’s someone else out there making the same argument more cogently, persuasively, and at a volume permitted by the Geneva Conventions. If that person isn’t out there, the argument probably isn’t worth hearing. (I can’t begin to tell you how much happier I am without screaming adults in my life. Their absence is a gift.)
When I need good commentary, I go to The Hill. Sure, “dangerous” occasionally makes an appearance and some of the columns are a little screamy, but I just skip over all that, knowing I’ll find at least one good piece there. If you take only one thing away from this site, please let it be that when you need refuge from non-existent danger and screaming adults, you can find it at The Hill.
