Two days ago, I said presidential debates don’t historically make a difference in campaigns. Then I fairly well talked myself out of that since there’s just the one scheduled debate this year. Then the debate happened and, to quote Ron Burgundy jumping into the bear pit, I immediately regret my decision.
It’s not a reach to say Harris won the debate. That’s apparent just based on Republican reactions to the night. It’s also apparent from post-debate focus groups. But will the polls move at all? In a number of swing voter interviews I read, the subjects said neither candidate answered the questions nor laid out achievable policy goals. So… hmm. Was this a Dem win on style but a draw on substance? It seems possible.
That’s is obviously the case Republicans would like to make, and I’d have no problem linking to them making it because I believe it can be done honestly. But the argument is more compelling coming from a Democrat, someone who believes Harris won and doesn’t want that victory to become a distraction.
It’s possible you know whom I’m linking to. If you don’t, you’re in for a treat even if you’re a Democrat. I hope you enjoy.
